It takes a blogosphere to raise a geek

I was at my company’s summer party last night at the Boathouse on Central Park, drinking too much and chatting with another employee from a non-technical department.

We started talking about the need to keep up to date on current affairs as professional professionals and he asked me how much time I spend every day reading up new developments in development. I knew the answer cold…

“At least an hour... during lunch”

In fact, at least half of what I know about development was discovered on my lunch break, time spent absorbing the muses of developers far wiser than me who post regularly on the Blogosphere. Their dedication and geekery makes me excited about my own geektential and reaching a level of geekosity where I feel like I have made valuable contributions to the world so that people can spend more time playing nicely others. Seriously.

To that end, I would like to thank the you all for communicating with me and I apologize for not commenting more.

Is the power of a euphemism proportional to its multiplicity of meanings?

I learned today to place more trust in my compatriots in code, not only within the office but also around the world. One of the things my Capoeira instructor reminds me of constantly is that I must first look with my eyes and hear with my ears before I come to conclusions. It’s a good lesson to learn and an especially important one when developing software in a collaborative environment, because when you have preconceived notions of what is “correct” code, it is easily possible to come to incorrect assumptions about another person’s work.

P.S. A relaxed coder is a productive coder. If that means walking the dog a couple of times over the weekend, so be it. He he he.
